New Direction: Slide Time

After a our last Unresidency meeting, it became clear that the coffin (in-progress) won’t necessarily work well for the space. I wish I knew that sooner. With about a month left, I’m being forced to shift directions, which is fine. I’ll still do the work that I proposed but not necessarily right now. So, what’s the new plan?

Moving forward, I will be working on 12x12 in shadow box “slides” featuring objects collected and created in response to the research of Theresa India Young’s collection at UMASS Boston — hair and fetishes.

  • The fetishes and my own hair will be photographed in a studio setting. I also have an image of TIY’s hair, which I might somehow incorporate into the slide.

  • Each image will be printed on a clear transfer and affixed onto a matboard that has a scaled slide opening.

  • The matboard will be affixed to a wooden shadow box. Inside the box, there will be a small LED light + a vellum sheet to diffuse the light

The greatest challenge is ensuring that the images will be visible in a compelling way with the light provided AND to make sure I have an LED that is long lasting (solar?) and accessible if needed for the purpose of changing batteries.

This idea came about out of necessity to change gears, but was influenced by a couple of the other participating artists. One is working in posters. The other is make pop art-style oversized cassettes. Mine will be oversized, but not as literally a slide. I like the idea of different analog ways of delivering information.
